The International Policy Centre for Inclusive Growth (IPC-IG) is conducting a series of webinars with judges and labour justice experts from five countries—Portugal, South Africa, Mexico, South Korea, and Argentina. The countries were selected based on their socioeconomic characteristics, demographic dimensions, state organisation and labour legislation criteria, and are part of an ongoing comparative analysis of labour justice systems, which is being conducted by the Centre.

The first webinar, held on 2 August, focused on Portugal, and was attended by Dr. Gonçalves da Silva, Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon and Vice-President of the Labour Law Institute; Dr. Liberal Fernandes, integrated researcher at the Faculty of Law of the University of Porto; Dr. Viriato Reis, Deputy Attorney General at the Lisbon Court of Appeal; and Dr. de Sousa Pereira, Labour Judge.

Speakers explained the current state of the Portuguese court system, highlighting the most problematic aspects that hinder the smooth functioning of labour justice; the friction between the right to strike and the definition and guarantee of minimum services; the role of the public prosecutor in labour justice; the practical perspective on labour dispute resolution; and the initial and continuous training provided to judges.

The next webinar is scheduled for 18 August and will focus on South Africa, discussing the performance of the Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration Commission (CCMA), and the South African labour dispute resolution system.
